At the end of Thursday’s hearing on the Constitutional Review, the committee for Northwest 2, consisting of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara has received a total of 103 memorandums from different groups and individuals.

The Public hearing is holding at the Sultan Maccido Institute for Qur’anic and General Studies in Sokoto.

At the public hearing, issues on the creation of new local government areas from the existing ones took the centre stage.

A coalition of over 300 groups in Sokoto came together to seek the creation of about 20 more local government areas.

The group, led by Hon. Balarabe Shehu Kakale proposed the creation of Shuni Local Government area, Sokoto East Local Government, Danchadi Local government and Gatawa local government among others.

“We are here today, as a coalition of professional groups, individuals, communities, farmers and groups to present”

“We presented key of the many constitutional amendments that we want to get done” he said.

The group also sought the granting of autonomy to local governments.

The Arewa Nationalist Movement represented by Engr. Abdulkadir Ibrahim Waziri advocated for the creation of a traditional council that will be independent of the state government.

Engr. Abdulkadir recalled the existence of the National Council of Chiefs in Kaduna during the first republic.

He, therefore, suggested that the national council of chiefs be established to operate independent of the state and their funding should be from the federal government.

The Arewa Nationalist Movement also called for the abolition of resource control to state governors, saying all resources belong to the federal republic of Nigeria.

Other issues that came to the fore at today's public hearing were Electoral reforms and autonomy for the Auditor General of the federation among others.

The Committee, therefore, assured the public that their proposals will be submitted to the National Assembly’s committee on constitutional review.

The Chairman of the constitutional review, Northwest 2 Zonal Committee, Muhammad Adamu Aliero, also promised to be present at the venue tomorrow, Friday, to receive more memorandum from Nigerians.
