The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN has said the President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government has begun taking concrete steps to address specific identified challenges within the justice sector. Fagbemi who gave the assurance in Abuja, during a press briefing on the National Summit on Justice 2024, noted that the Summit will review, validate and adopt the revised National Policy on Justice 2024-2028.
President Bola Tinubu will declare the Summit open on April 24, while reknown legal scholar, Dr. Willy Mutunga, will deliver the keynote address. Among issues to be considered are prison reforms, access to justice for the average Nigerian, and review of electoral laws and procedures.
He further explained that the Summit will also deliberate on eliminating delays and inefficiencies in justice delivery and evolve ways of further reducing the burden cases at the Supreme Court. Fagbemi said the proposed laws are expected to serve as a catalyst for collective action and provide a guiding framework for the relevant governmental institutions in the establishment of an effective, efficient, and people-centred justice system.
He stressed that the government cannot remain complacent in the face of obstacles impeding the delivery of justice for all Nigerians, hence the essence of the Summit which is directed at uniting efforts towards birthing a more just and equitable country. "Repositioning the Justice System: Constitutional, statutory, and Operational Reforms for Access and Efficiency" has been selected as the theme for the National Summit on Justice 2024.
